MLK Day of ServiceThe MLK Day of Service is an annual tradition at Shady Side Academy, where students, parents, faculty and staff come together to serve the Pittsburgh community, making the holiday "a day ON, not a day off."

Current students, parents and faculty/staff are invited participate in the eighth annual SSA MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019. Volunteers will serve six different organizations at six locations. Review the sites and project descriptions below and complete the online registration form by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019.


Registration is only open to SSA students, parents, faculty/staff and trustees.

NOTE: PK-5 students must be accompanied by a parent at the Junior School. All service activities conclude between noon and 1 p.m. and no lunch will be provided.


  • 8:30-9 a.m. - Optional shuttle bus from Senior School tennis courts to Junior School
  • 9-9:30 a.m. - Registration and kick-off for all volunteers at the Junior School and continental breakfast
  • 9:45 a.m. - Off-site volunteers depart for service locations via bus/van
  • 9:30 a.m.-noon - Volunteer activities at the Junior School for grades PK-5 and adults
  • 10 a.m.-noon - Volunteer activities at off-site locations for grades 6-12 and adults
  • Noon-12:30 p.m. - Optional shuttle bus from Junior School back to Senior School
  • 12:30 p.m. - Off-site volunteers return to Junior School via bus/van
  • 12:45 p.m. - Optional shuttle bus from Junior School back to Senior School

Projects Sites & Descriptions

Grades PK-5 and Adults

Site: SSA Junior School, 400 S. Braddock Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15221
Serving: Beverly's Birthdays, Catholic Charities of Pittsburgh, Center for Victims

Volunteers will spend the morning making birthday goody bags for Beverly’s Birthdays, activity bags for children serviced through Center for Victims, and snack bags for Catholic Charities warming stations. Note: PK-5 students must be accompanied by a parent.

Beverly’s Birthdays provides birthday cheer for children experiencing homelessness. Catholic Charities is a social service agency serving those in their time of great need. Center for Victims provides advocacy for those who have been victims of crimes.

Grades 6-12 and Adults

Serving: Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Harmarville (Formerly HealthSouth Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital)

Volunteers will learn about the HealthSouth facility, make cards and paper flowers and get to know the patients.

HealthSouth Harmarville is a 162-bed hospital that offers comprehensive rehabilitation services designed to return patients to leading active, independent lives.

Serving: H.J. Heinz Campus of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System

Volunteers will play bingo and perform with and for our veterans.

The H.J. Heinz Campus of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System offers transitional care, rehabilitation, dementia and hospice care, vocational rehabilitation, and outpatient medical services for veterans.

Volunteers will prepare dinner and make cards for patients and family members visiting Pittsburgh for medical treatment. The menu includes salad, pasta and meatballs, cookies and cupcakes donated by Metz Culinary Management.

Family House provides a “home away from home” for patients and/or their families who are in Pittsburgh seeking medical treatment. By offering convenient, affordable housing in a home-like environment, Family House reduces the emotional and financial stress for people facing a medical crisis in a city where they may be strangers.
