MLK Day of Service 2018
The MLK Day of Service is an annual tradition at Shady Side Academy, where students, parents, faculty and staff come together to serve the Pittsburgh community, making the holiday "a day ON, not a day off."
Current students, parents and faculty/staff are invited participate in the eighth annual SSA MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018. Volunteers will serve six different organizations at six locations. Review the sites and project descriptions below and complete the online registration form by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018.
NOTE: PK-5 students must be accompanied by a parent at the Junior School, where service activities conclude at noon with no lunch provided. Grades 6-12 off-site service activities will run until 2 p.m. with a bag lunch provided (turkey sandwich or veggie wrap).
- 8:30-9 a.m. - Optional shuttle bus from Senior School (tennis courts) to Junior School
- 9-9:30 a.m. - Registration and kick-off for all volunteers at the Junior School
- 9:45 a.m. - Off-site volunteers depart for service locations via bus/van
- 10 a.m.-noon - Volunteer activities at the Junior School (no lunch provided)
- Noon-12:30 - Optional shuttle bus from Junior School back to Senior School
- 10 a.m.-2 p.m. - Volunteer activities at off-site locations (bag lunch provided)
- 2 p.m. - Off-site volunteers return to Junior School via bus/van
- 3-3:30 p.m. - Optional shuttle bus from Junior School back to Senior School
Projects Sites & Descriptions
Grades PK-5 and Adults
Site: SSA Junior School, 400 S. Braddock Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15221
Serving: Beverly's Birthdays, Meals for Friends, Auberle's 412 Youth Zone
Volunteers will spend the morning making birthday goody bags for Beverly’s Birthdays, decorating placemats for Meals for Friends and assembling hygiene kits for 412 Youth Zone. Note: PK-5 students must be accompanied by a parent.
Beverly’s Birthdays provides birthday cheer for children experiencing homelessness. Meals
for Friends prepares and delivers meals to senior citizens and disabled individuals living in Wilkins and surrounding communities. 412 Youth Zone serves teens and young adults transitioning out of the foster care system.
Serving: HealthSouth Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital

Volunteers will learn about the HealthSouth facility, make blankets and suncatchers, play games, sing songs and get to know the patients.
HealthSouth Harmarville is a 162-bed hospital that offers comprehensive rehabilitation services designed to return patients to leading active, independent lives.
Serving: H.J. Heinz Campus of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System

Volunteers will play bingo, make blankets, do arts and crafts, and perform with and for our veterans.
The H.J. Heinz Campus of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System offers transitional care, rehabilitation, dementia and hospice care, vocational rehabilitation, and outpatient medical services for veterans.

Volunteers will prepare dinner and make cards for patients and family members visiting Pittsburgh for medical treatment. The menu includes salad, lasagna, cookies and cupcakes.
Family House provides a “home away from home” for patients and/or their families who are in Pittsburgh seeking medical treatment. By offering convenient, affordable housing in a home-like environment, Family House reduces the emotional and financial stress for people facing a medical crisis in a city where they may be strangers.
