Internships & Job Shadowing

Shady Side Academy students have the unique opportunity to explore different career paths by tapping into SSA's robust network of alumni, parents and past parents. Students interested in a particular field can be matched with a professional in the SSA community for a job shadowing or internship opportunity.

Internships

Internships provide students with hands-on training allowing them to build skills necessary to succeed. Programs are available in the summer or during the school year and vary in length.

American Textile Company

Heinz Endowments - Youth Philanthropy Program
The internship program will provide Pittsburgh-area youth with an opportunity to work to improve their community by developing and implementing a youth philanthropy project.

Magee-Womens Research Institute
MWRI is an independent research institute and one of the largest institutes in the nation that focuses on reproductive biology, women’s health, and infants’ health. This Summer Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to participate in basic, translational, or clinical scientific research with the goal of interesting students in biomedical research as a potential career. The program is open to all high school students with preference given to rising seniors. APPLICATIONS DUE MARCH 15!

Nine Mile Run Watershed Association Summer Internship
Nine Mile Run Watershed Association is now offering an exciting opportunity for high school students to learn about stream water quality monitoring! Our summer 2017 Monitoring Internship will provide students with hands on training and skill development with freshwater stream monitoring methods, equipment, and data management. They will also be trained to identify local flora and fauna while learning about restoration area stewardship. Interns will work primarily outdoors with environmental professionals in the fields of biology, ecology, and environmental science.

UPCI Academy - University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute
The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) Academy strives to provide cutting edge research and career preparatory experiences to a diverse group of highly motivated high school students who are pursuing higher education and careers in STEM fields, especially research and medicine. Job Shadowing

A job shadowing experience immerses students in a career for a short period of time, typically a day. Students learn first-hand what its like to spend a day in a professional's shoes, helping them to better evaluate possible career paths.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

Do you love animals? The Zoo offers two opportunities for high school students to connect with keepers and aquarists and learn more about these exciting career fields: Keeper Conversations and Pizza with the Keepers.

Keeper Conversations – $13 per session
Students in grades 10-12 who would like to shadow a zookeeper will tour animal areas as they chat with keepers and aquarists about the work they love. Keeper Conversations are held the first Tuesday of the month, October through April, except January. Register online for one, or all six.

Pizza With the Keepers – $22 per session
Students in grades 10-12 are invited to join keepers, aquarists, and veterinary staff for an informal lunch to discuss animal-related career goals. Staff from Kids Kingdom, the reptile department, the mammal department, PPG Aquarium, and veterinary/animal care may be in attendance. Behind the scenes tours will take place after lunch
