PA Plants & Presents Sale Deadline Extended to April 11 The deadline to order from the SSA Parents' Association Plants & Presents sale has been extended to Monday, April 11. The sale features a Bulldog Blooms planter, an assortment of fresh herbs and beautiful hanging baskets. Pick up is on Thursday, May 5 at either the Junior School or Senior School. View product offerings and descriptions and use the online form to place your order. Registration for SSA Summer Programs Registration for summer programs for kids entering grades PK-12 is open on the SSA Summer website! A variety of in-person camps and classes are offered from June 13 to August 12. Operating on our three campuses in Fox Chapel, SSA Summer is committed to providing educational, developmentally appropriate, affordable, safe and FUN summer programs for kids in the Pittsburgh region. Camps are filling up fast, so register now! National Bulldog Day, April 21 - Pet Photos Wanted! In honor of our mascot, all four SSA campuses will be celebrating National Bulldog Day on Thursday, April 21. Limited-edition pet bandanas in sizes small or large are now available for $5 in the SSA Spirit Store. Snap a photo of your pet wearing their bandana and send it to ssabulldogs@shadysideacademy.org. Submissions will be shared on the Shady Side social media channels! Blood Drive, April 28 A blood drive will be held Thursday, April 28, from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., in the Benedum Student Center in Rowe Hall at the Senior School. Students age 16 and up are eligible to donate. A reminder for 16 year-olds: bring a signed permission form to the blood drive and a photo ID with your date of birth. Seventeen-year-olds no longer need a permission form. Adults, if you wish to donate elsewhere, please mention SSA and we will receive credit for your donation. Walk-ins are welcome, but it's easy to sign up online, and lets the staff know how many participants to expect. When registering online, scroll down to the bottom, and enter our Group Code "HS010068" to search for our blood drive. SSA Spirit Store Spring Merchandise New tanks, T-shirts, shorts, lightweight sweatshirts and more have been added to the SSA Spirit Store. Virtual Grandparents and Special Friends Day, April 11 Grandparents and special friends will be able to virtually join your child's classroom via Zoom on Monday, April 11, where they will enjoy an interactive experience. See details in the March 20 email and register online. Zoom links will be shared with registrants closer to the event date. Spring Dress-Down Day, April 14 Students will be able to wear any fun spring attire they would like on Thursday, April 14. Anything that reminds them of spring and gets them excited for the warm weather ahead is fine! Please ensure students continue to wear tennis shoes as they are important for recess and PE. Parent-Teacher Conferences, April 19 Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place on Tuesday, April 19. Parents may decide if they would prefer to attend virtually or in-person. Your child's teacher should have shared a conference sign-up sheet with you. Conference childcare will be provided in the wing hall for families who only need care during their conference. Full-day child care is also offered by the after school programs office; register online by Monday, April 11. National Bulldog Day and FurKid Rescue Supply Drive On Thursday, April 21, in honor of our mascot, students will be able to dress down in blue and gold for National Bulldog Day. Treats and other activities are planned to make the day special. Families are invited to participate in a donation drive to benefit FurKid Rescue during the week of April 18-21. Items needed include dog and cat toys, treats, food and beds, harnesses, leashes, collars, blankets, crates, laundry detergent and bleach. Download the flyer. End of Year Events Please mark your calendars for the end of year assembly on Thursday, June 2, where we will celebrate the conclusion of the school year. The last day of school for students will be Monday, June 6. Closing exercises for fifth grade will be held on Tuesday, June 7, for families of fifth grade students only. More information will be shared in the coming weeks. Lost & Found The Lost & Found, located under the stairs in the lobby by the office, is full of items that need claimed. Also, please remember to write your child's name on clothing so that it can be easily returned. Birthday Treats If you are sending in a birthday treat, please be sure to contact your child's homeroom teacher and school nurse Kelly Sample so that any allergy information can be considered. Lynn Voelp Reed Day, April 22 We're happy to announce that Lynne Voelp Reed Day is returning to the Junior School on Friday, April 22. Lynne Voelp Reed Day (named to honor a former teacher) is celebrated with a carnival in the gym and a visit from the Senior School "Lifers." Together, the Lifers, Parents' Association, parent volunteers and teachers will put together a carnival. It is terrific fun and we hope you will be a part of it by volunteering to serve on the Lynn Voelp Reed Day Committee. Please sign up online if you'd like to volunteer your time. Parents Night Social, April 27 The Parents' Association invites parents to attend the Parents' Night Social on Wednesday, April 27, at the Junior School. Head of Lower Schools Dr. Jennifer Asmonga and Director of Equity, Inclusion and Community Relations Lillian Grate will be our guest speakers for the evening. The time will be announced soon. International Fair and Pot Luck Dinner, May 6 The fourth annual Junior School International Fair will be held in person on Friday, May 6, from 8:30-11:40 a.m. to help our children celebrate and learn about the many different heritages and cultures in our school and community. Volunteers are needed to host and bring their country/culture to life. Sign up online by Friday, April 8. The Pot Luck Dinner is Friday, May 6, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Prepare an appetizer, salad, entree, desert or beverage to share with the community. End of Year Events We are excited to bring back Moving Up Day this year! This is a day to celebrate the end of the school year and students "moving up" to the next grade. TALK's Parent Program: Helping Teens Navigate a Complex World On Thursday evenings from April 21 to May 26, TALK founder and CEO Samantha Bushman will offer a synchronous six-session online intensive course designed to help you better prepare your children to make healthy decisions. Sessions will run Thursday nights from 7-8:30 p.m. via Zoom for six weeks. The cost to participate is $300 for the series. Parent Education Webinar, April 28 The Senior School invites eighth grade parents to join us for an engaging evening with a pair of national experts who will help you navigate the parenting and college admissions journey with your teen. Supporting Your Teen: Balancing Ambition, Wellness & Reality, featuring Dr. Lisa Damour and Rick Clark, will be held Thursday, April 28, at 7 p.m., via Zoom. See the April 5 email for details. Parent Volunteer Opportunities - Email Krista Tevar to volunteer for Teacher Appreciation Week, beginning Tuesday, May 3. We plan to do something special for the teachers each day of the week.
- Volunteers and a chairperson are needed for the Teacher Luncheon on Tuesday, June 7. This is an opportunity to let our teachers know how much we appreciate all they do. Parent Walking Group Anyone interested in joining the Middle School Parent Walking Group is invited to show up Tuesdays at 9 a.m., on the Senior School track. Featuring more than 70 colleges (list of attendees coming soon), the PCIS College Fair allows students to expand their horizons and college research while providing time for in-depth conversations with admissions counselors who are glad to meet and engage with SSA students.
