The PA Plants & Presents Sale Is Open! The SSA Parents' Association Plants & Presents sale is open now through Monday, April 4. The sale features a Bulldog Blooms planter, an assortment of fresh herbs and beautiful hanging baskets. Pick up is on Thursday, May 5 at either the Junior School or Senior School. View product offerings and descriptions and use the online form to place your order. Registration for SSA Summer Programs Is Open Registration for summer programs for kids entering grades PK-12 is open on the SSA Summer website! A variety of in-person camps and classes are offered from June 13 to August 12. Operating on our three campuses in Fox Chapel, SSA Summer is committed to providing educational, developmentally appropriate, affordable, safe and FUN summer programs for kids in the Pittsburgh region. Camps are filling up fast, so register now! Posner Award Nominations Due March 25 Parents, students and alumni are extended the extraordinary opportunity to celebrate the outstanding teaching and personal excellence of our faculty by providing nominations for the Posner Award for Meritorious Faculty Performance. The purpose of the Posner Award is "to recognize, inspire and reward faculty at SSA who, through their special "gift of teaching" and mentoring, have affected, in a highly special way, the learning, development and lives of one or more individual students. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 25. See the Feb. 22 email for more information. Mendelssohn Choir Performs at the Hillman, April 2 The Mendelsson Choir of Pittsburgh will present Toward the Unknown Region, a concert about boldly emerging from these uncertain times with daring optimism and a sense of renewal, on Saturday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m., at the Hillman Center for Performing Arts at the Senior School. Dress-Down Days, March 11 and 17 On Friday, March 11, students may wear SSA gear or blue and gold for a Bulldog Dress-Down Day in honor of the boys basketball and boys and sirls swimming teams' performances at WPIALs. On Thursday, March 17, in honor of St. Patrick's Day, students may wear green or their favorite St. Patrick's Day apparel. Coffee With the PA and Head of School, March 15 Join us for the third Coffee With the PA and Head of School, Tuesday, March 15, from 7-7:45 p.m. via Zoom. School Counselor Claudine Runnette will talk about friendship, its role in developing social skills and how we can help our children navigate the ups and downs. A Q&A with Dr. Asmonga will follow. March Birthday Books, March 18 We will celebrate birthday books at assembly on Friday, March 18, for March birthdays. Lost & Found The Lost & Found, located under the stairs in the lobby by the office, is full of items that need claimed. Also, please remember to write your child's name on clothing so that it can be easily returned. Birthday Treats If you are sending in a birthday treat, please be sure to contact your child's homeroom teacher and school nurse Kelly Sample so that any allergy information can be considered. Lynne Voelp Reed Day Volunteers Needed Lynne Voelp Reed Day is returning to the Junior School this spring! Lynne Voelp Reed Day (named to honor a former teacher) is celebrated with a carnival in the gym and a visit from the Senior School "Lifers." Together, the Lifers, Parents' Association, parent volunteers and teachers will put together a carnival. It is terrific fun and we hope you will be a part of it by volunteering to serve on the Lynn Voelp Reed Day Committee. Please email Rachel Kutz-Flamenbaum with any questions or ideas. The date will be announced soon. Parents' Association Volunteers Needed The Parents' Association is seeking volunteers to help with the International Fair, Paint Night, holiday decorating, and more. Spring Spirit Week, March 13-18 Spring Spirit Week is Monday-Friday, March 13-18, to celebrate the week leading up to Spring Break. Students can win SSA swag for the most spirited dress each day Monday-Thursday. View the schedule below or download the PDF. - Monday - Pi Day: dress in stripes, circles and other geometric shapes. Pi Day poster competition during conference.
- Tuesday - Fandom Day: dress in your favorite school-appropriate team, band or show apparel. Trivia game during lunch.
- Wednesday - Color Wars Day: 6th grade - blue, 7th grade - yellow/gold, 8th grade - white. The grade with the most spirit gets a dress-down day the first Friday after break.
- Thursday - Pajama Day: Wear school-appropriate pajamas. Movies and popcorn during Advisory.
- Friday - Dress-down for Charity - Donate $3-$5 for Brother's Brother Ukraine Relief Fund. Faculty vs. 8th grade knockout game.
Parent Volunteer Opportunities - Email Krista Tevar to volunteer for Teacher Appreciation Week, beginning Tuesday, May 3. We plan to do something special for the teachers each day of the week.
- Volunteers and a chairperson are needed for the Teacher Luncheon on Tuesday, June 7. This is an opportunity to let our teachers know how much we appreciate all they do. Parents will provide appetizers, main dishes and desserts for the teachers to enjoy after school. Email Krista Tevar to volunteer.
Parent Walking Group Anyone interested in joining the Middle School Parent Walking Group is invited to show up Tuesdays at 9 a.m., on the Senior School track. All abilities and fitness levels are welcome. Contact Margo Litwin with questions. Formal Dress Clothing Swap Families are encouraged to stop by the Middle School to pick up a blue blazer and a white button-down shirt or drop off formal dress clothing items that no longer fit. | Choral and String Orchestra Concert Tonight The String Orchestra and choral groups will perform a concert tonight, March 10, in Rauh Theater, at 7:30 p.m. Come out and enjoy a night of beautiful music! 2022-2023 International Exchange Program Applications Due Tomorrow We are cautiously hopeful that we will resume exchanges during the 2022-2023 school year. Ukranian Dress-Down Day Tomorrow Community members are encouraged to wear blue and yellow, the colors of the Ukranian flag, in support o Ukraine for a dress-down day tomorrow, March 11. Supply Drive for Ukraine Through March 17 The Service Learning Club is supporting a supply drive to benefit Saint Peter and Saint Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church and its collection for Ukraine. Donations of hygiene items, medical supplies and non-perishable food items are being collected in the bins in the Dean's Office and the Library. Clothing items are not being collected. Pittsburgh National College Fair, March 17 Hundreds of colleges and universities from around the country will be in attendance at the Pittsburgh National College Fair, Thursday, March 17, from 6:30-9 p.m., at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Downtown Pittsburgh. Representatives will be available to provide information about their respective schools and answer questions about the college process. Online registration is free but required. Course Requests Due by March 18 Course requests for next year are due by March 18 (see the 2022-2023 Course Catalog). Students will request courses in individual meetings with their advisor from March 7-18, and families will have an opportunity to review all requests after spring break. Who Run the World Women's History Panel, March 19 The Black Scholars Society, a local organization of high school students that was recently founded by senior Jasmine DeBruce, is organizing a Women's History Month event called Who Run the World, Saturday, March 19, at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. The Warhol Teen Fashion Show, March 25 Senior Crystal Ma is helping to organize the Teen Fashion Show at The Andy Warhol Museum on Friday, March 25 at 6 p.m. The show will feature repurposed and recycled garments and accessories created by Pittsburgh teens, and Ma and some SSA Art Club students have submitted designs for the show. Webinar: College Fundamentals for Families: Session 2, April 7 Join the College Counseling Office for its annual webinar series, College Fundamentals for Families, on Thursday, April 7 at noon, via Zoom.
