Recaps & Good News Sept. 9, 2021
Dear Shady Side Families,
As our nation commemorates the 20th anniversary of 9/11 this weekend, our students, especially our younger ones, will likely find themselves confronting a disquieting historical event they did not live through and struggle to understand.
Pediatricians, school counselors, and child psychologists encourage parents and teachers to curate information about traumatic events like 9/11 and present it in age-appropriate ways that children can adjust to and cope with, typically offering some version of the straightforward guidance below:
Start by finding out what a child has already heard and ask them what questions they have.
Though our students were not alive at the time, 9/11 and its impact have shaped them and the future they will inherit in ways we are only now growing to appreciate. When they confront or inquire about these events, we serve them by providing constructive responses and opportunities to observe and reflect upon this significant day in American history.
Please join me this weekend in remembering all those who gave their lives on September 11, 2001.
Sincerely,
Bart Griffith '93
