Dear Shady Side Community,
As most of you know already, service learning and civic engagement have always been an important part of our ongoing efforts to inspire expansive thought, ethical action, and responsible leadership in our students. None of this has changed with the momentary shift to social distancing and virtual schooling. Shady Side people everywhere remain focused on serving a new set of needs brought forth by the pandemic. Here are several examples:
Such outreach represents just a handful of the many ways we are serving our neighbors while our campuses and school buildings remain closed. At a time when so many of us could easily turn inward, consumed by our own personal anxieties, we continue to demonstrate institutional citizenship in pursuit of our mission. Such leadership inspires hope and important pride in SSA, challenging all of us to continue taking action and making a difference.

Student-Produced Short Film Wins Two Independent Shorts Awards Senior Grady Munroe's short film "Playlist" won a Bronze Award for Best Child/Young Actress (junior Annabel Everett) and an Honorable Mention for Best Young Filmmaker (Munroe) in the March 2020 ISA film festival. Week Two of Distance Learning Follow the hashtags #SSAdistancelearning and #SSAtogetherapart on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and be sure to tag us in your distance learning photos! Senior Qualifies for National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament Senior Giri Viswanathan won the Congress House category of the National Speech and Debate Association district qualifier and will compete in the NSDA National Tournament online this June.
Sean Casey '84 and Church Brew Works Host Pop-up Produce Giveaway Church Brew Works, in partnership with Sysco Pittsburgh and 412 Food Rescue, provided fresh produce to more than 400 local families. David Wiggins '99 and Sama Eyewear Join the Fight Against Coronavirus Wiggins, a partner in and global ambassador for Sama Eyewear, says the company is producing KN95 respirators, protective eyewear and face shields for medical professionals. Lisa Scales '78 Leads the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank In Feeding Those In Need Lisa Scales '78, president and CEO of The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, says the number of people the food bank is serving from its facility has increased five-fold in a short amount of time. Shady Side Academy & Metz Donate Unused Food Via 412 Food Rescue Twelve cases of fruit, veggies, cheese, yogurt, juice and snacks was delivered to the Boys & Girls Club in Millvale, where it was distributed to families in need.
