March 30, 2020 Dear Shady Side Academy Community, After careful consideration of the federal government's extension yesterday of social distancing guidelines until April 30, as well as recent COVID-19 updates from local and national public health organizations, we have elected to extend our campus closure and distance learning plan through at least Sunday, May 3. This means that all school events, activities and athletics scheduled through Sunday, May 3, are canceled and will not be rescheduled, with the possible exception of the prom. We know that is a significant milestone for our seniors, so if we are able to return to school on May 4, we hope to reschedule the prom for a later date, acknowledging this event may end up taking on a different form than originally planned. I share in the disappointment of having to miss the many significant events scheduled for April across all four campuses. As we continue to monitor the COVID-19 virus closely, please know that in the event we must extend distance learning through the end of the school year, our leadership team remains committed to holding the Senior School commencement ceremony on campus, regardless of the date. At present, we are adopting a "wait-and-see" posture regarding the end of the year. Once again, I encourage all of you to review the Distance Learning Family Guide, which offers students and parents more comprehensive information and advice in support of Tuesday's launch of our distance learning program. I understand the further challenge and demand that this extension brings everyone in the community. We are all doing our best to find our way into new daily patterns and activities. None of this is easy, but if we remain focused on inspiring our students and the well-being of our school community, we can continue to find meaning in it all and ample reasons to be thankful. Wishing you all health and safety, Bart Griffith '93 President
