Watch SSA on KDKA's Hometown High Q March 7 A team of three Senior School students will compete on the local high school quiz show Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m. on KDKA-TV. Eighth Grader Qualifies for National Geographic State GeoBee As SSA's school champion, Pedro de Silva will compete at the state competition March 27 in Harrisburg. Trixie Sabundayo Named Next Head of Senior School Sabundayo, who is currently head of the upper school at Princeton Day School in New Jersey, will start at SSA on July 1, 2020. Senior School Students Compete at DECA State Career Development Conference Freshman Nichole Poltinnikov placed second in the Personal Finance event and advanced to DECA's International Career Development Conference in Nashville on April 29-May 2. SSA Swimmers Win Medals at WPIAL Championships, Qualify for PIAAs The girls finished 10th overall and won medals in two events; the boys finished 11th and won medals in three. Eight SSA swimmers in five events qualified for PIAAs. Sloane Davidson '97 Named a 2020 Presidential Leadership Scholar Davidson, founder and CEO of Hello Neighbor, will learn from former U.S. presidents, key former administration officials, business and civic leaders, and leading academics in this national leadership program. Hillman Performing Arts Series Presents Blackwater, March 14 High-energy Celtic band will perform on Saturday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m. Get tickets at www.thehillman.org. SSA Technology Integration Specialist Receives PAECT Outstanding Leader of the Year Award Jody Kokladas was recognized for demonstrating outstanding achievement and leadership in implementing technology to improve education. Middle School Collects Breakfast Items for Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank The Middle School community collected breakfast items for families in the community to send their children to school with a healthy breakfast. Senior Co-Authors Published Medical Research Paper Research that senior Talia Busquets did this summer in the AGH Radiation Oncology Center was published in the journal Clinical Lung Cancer. Speech and Debate Students Qualify for PHSSL State Tournament Students will compete at the PHSSL state tournament on March 13-14 at Bloomsburg University. Middle School Science Olympiad Team Finishes Third at Mentor Invitational Twenty-six SSA student teams earned top eight finishes in their events, including two first-place finishes. Junior School Welcomes Alumnus and Illustrator Adam J.B. Lane '89 Lane and David Slavin, the illustrator and author behind the graphic novel series Odd Gods, spoke with students and signed books. Senior School Science Olympiad Team Places 12th at Penn Invitational The team will next compete in regionals at California University of Pennsylvania on March 4.
US History Classes Visit Carnegie Library in Oakland The students visited the library to conduct research for their U.S. History papers. Senior School Students Win Carnegie Library's Battle of the Books The SSA team of sophomores Isabel Brunner, Riley Doyle and Emmie Jordan and junior Bridget Onest earned first place at the annual book trivia contest. Middle School Instrumentalists Perform at Duquesne Club Three students provided musical entertainment for a United Way fundraiser. Senior Wins Third Prize in International Music Competition Aniket Kumta earned third prize in the Best Chopin Performance category of the Great Composers Competition. Country Day School Fifth Graders Visit the Glimcher Tech & Design Hub The students worked on their Egyptian Virtual Museum Project, creating a pyramid with hieroglyphics and augmented reality Senior Crowned United States of America's Teen Senior Marianna Daniele was crowned the winner of the United States of America's Teen at the pageant on Feb. 16 in Las Vegas. Middle School Teams Participate in Carnegie Library Battle of the Book Tournaments Teams of students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades competed in the annual team trivia contest. Shady Side Academy Hosts Youth Squash Tournament Thirty-two players from eight local schools competed in the SSA Squash Saturday Under 15 Tournament. Senior School Students Attend Fourth Annual Student Leadership Conference More than 60 student leaders attended the conference focused on mindful leadership, empathy and inclusivity. Congressman Presents Students With Award, Visits Glimcher Tech & Design Hub U.S. Rep Conor Lamb visited SSA to present Jason Wu and Nick Zana with their Congresional App Challenge awards and also toured the Glimcher Tech & Design Hub. Country Day School Kindergarten Visits the Glimcher Tech & Design Hub Mr. Robinson helped the students to make keychains from self-portraits using the laser cutter.
