Dear Shady Side Academy Parents,

Once again the summer has flown by and the beginning of the school year is upon us! I hope everyone was able to relax and enjoy the free time that was much needed by all!

Last year, the Shady Side Academy Parents’ Association (PA) introduced a new unified structure that was created to build a better sense of community among the three schools. Although last year was a trial run, we were pleased that we were able to successfully create activities and events that brought us all together, whether it be to volunteer on the MLK Day of Service, mingle at the Community Cocktail Party, shop at the Summer Reading Kick-Off or enjoy our children’s artwork at the Three School Brunch.

This year, we will continue our mission to unify the three schools with better communication and coordinated activities that will provide parents a variety of opportunities to meet others and become involved. To supplement the cost of these activities, the PA will again collect dues of $20 per student, which will appear on your November statement. This will allow us to offset some of the costs of the activities the PA supports at all three schools.

In addition to the dues, there are some simple ways to support the PA in your everyday lives throughout the school year. Here is what you can do:

  • Purchase Giant Eagle gift cards that can be used for groceries, gas or other gift cards.
  • Order plants at the Holiday Plant Sale in December.
  • Participate in the Lands’ End School Rewards Program; use our school code (900033986) when you check out so that we get credit! We get 3% of net sales.
  • Register your Target Visa or Red Card; we get 1% of the total sale every time you shop at Target.

We will start the year by offering a printed version of the “S” book, the SSA community directory. Both the online and PDF versions will be available to all families on the SSA website, but in addition, the PA will offer a printed, spiral-bound version at our cost-$5 per copy, billed to your student account. During the first week of school, you will receive an e-mail from the Communications Office with a PDF proof of the “S” book and a link to an online order form. Please review your family’s contact information and, if you wish to order a printed copy(ies) of the S book, complete the online form by the deadline. The PA will only print enough books to fill advance orders.

I want to thank all of the parents, faculty and staff who have supported the PA throughout the years. Your encouragement and willingness to help have provided us with the opportunity to connect with families and enrich the lives of all students at Shady Side Academy.
