On Sept. 9, 2020, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Shady Side Academy alumna Christy Wiegand '93, an assistant U.S. attorney based in Pittsburgh, as a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. She was confirmed by an 82-14 vote.

Wiegand's confirmation filled the 10-judge Western District bench for the first time since April 2013.
