Physicist Dr. Christine Krauland '03 Speaks at Senior School Assembly

Dr. Christine Krauland '03Shady Side Academy alumna and physicist Dr. Christine Krauland '03 returned to SSA to speak to Senior School students at an assembly on Dec. 17, 2018.

Krauland is a scientist in the Inertial Fusion Technology division of General Atomics and is stationed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in Livermore, Calif. There she is responsible for, among other things, developing new methods for investigating high-energy reactions using the NIF laser. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree in atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences and a Ph.D. in applied physics from the University of Michigan, where her dissertation was in high-energy density (HED) physics. She served two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Diego, before joining General Atomics in 2016.

Krauland spoke to students about her research, what it is like to be a professional scientist, and the educational and career path she took to get there. After the assembly, she met with interested students in the McIlroy Center for Science and Innovation.

Krauland is the daughter of Senior School Dean of Studies Mary Krauland.
