SSA Wins Three State Titles at PIAA Track & Field Championships

Dino Tomlin and Melissa RigginsIt was a record day for Shady Side Academy track and field on Saturday, May 26, as SSA student-athletes captured three state titles and won medals in two other events at the PIAA AA Track and Field Championships in Shippensburg, Pa.

On the girls' side, freshman Melissa Riggins collected two state titles, winning gold in the 1600 meters in a school-record time of 4:52.33 and the 800 meters in a time of 2:16.38. (Riggins had won both events at the WPIAL Championships on May 17 too.) The WPIAL champion 4x800-meter relay team of senior Hannah Steffey, junior Krystyna Rytel, senior Jeanne Lauer and Riggins earned a fourth-place medal at the PIAAs, finishing in a school-record time of 9:36.76.

Despite competing in only three events, the SSA girls finished fourth overall in the PIAA team standings with 25 points.

On the boys' side, just as he did at WPIALs, junior Dino Tomlin won a gold medal in the 300-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 37.93 and a silver medal in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.97. The 4x100 meter relay team of Tomlin, senior Ezekyel Roberts, junior Skyy Moore and junior Brendan Gaffney, which placed fifth at WPIALs, finshed 19th in the PIAA preliminaries and did not advance to the final race.
