The boys' prep team competes in the Midwest Prep Hockey League (MPHL). The team also participates in highly competitive prep school tournaments and travels to Europe every three years for a unique international experience. The players' regimen includes six days a week on the ice plus an intense off-ice weight training program.

History
The boys' hockey program at Shady Side Academy started in 1981-1982 as a club program in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League. After experiencing success at both AA and AAA levels of the WPIHL, SSA moved the program up to the prep level in 1999-2000 under Head Coach Len Semplice, who founded the Midwest Prep Hockey League (MPHL) in 1999 along with Gilmour Academy, Lake Forest Academy, St. Francis School and Park Tudor Academy. Bulldog players have gone on to compete at the NCAA Division 1, 2, and 3 levels, as well as numerous junior programs in the United States and Canada.
Schedule
The prep schedule consists of 50-60 games over the course of the season. The Bulldogs play against MPHL teams such as Gilmour Academy, Lake Forest Academy, St. Francis, Rice Memorial High, Bishops College, Ridley College and Rothersay Netherwood School during five league weekends over the season, with four or five games per league weekend.
Head Coach Eric Tangradi
A second-round pick of the Anaheim Ducks in the 2007 National Hockey League (NHL) draft, Coach Tangradi enjoyed a professional hockey career extending more than 12 years and 700 games, including stints with the Pittsburgh Penguins, New Jersey Devils, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets. He also played for several teams in the American Hockey League (AHL), including the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Hamilton Bulldogs, Binghamton Devils and Grand Rapids Griffins, whom he helped win the 2017 Calder Cup as an assistant captain. Coach Tangradi has been an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 18U Prep team and has led skill development clinics and 1-on-1 training sessions with youth players across the Western Pennsylvania region. Early in his professional career, he conducted the Eric Tangradi Hockey School in Philadelphia, his hometown. The product of an independent school prep hockey experience himself, Coach Tangradi attended Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pa., where he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame. Prior to Wyoming Seminary, he attended Philadelphia's Archbishop Carroll High School, where he helped the Patriots win the Pennsylvania Cup Class AA state hockey championship in 2004.
