Gwyneth Philips ’19 Makes History in Professional Women’s Hockey

Gwyneth Philips, a member of Shady Side Academy’s Class of 2019, has achieved remarkable milestones in her ice hockey career. After graduating from Shady Side, Gwyneth’s dedication to the sport earned her a spot on a Division I college team at Northeastern University, where she also earned a degree in Industrial Engineering.

Balancing rigorous academics with athletics, Gwyneth excelled as a top goaltender for the Northeastern Huskies. Her exceptional skills led to her selection for the USA Hockey National Team, a prestigious achievement highlighting her as an elite athlete.

In a historic moment, Gwyneth was recently drafted by Ottawa as the 14th overall pick, making her the first goaltender selected in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) draft and the first Shady Side graduate to play in the PWHL.  

Gwyneth's journey from student-athlete to professional player is an inspiring testament to her hard work and dedication.
