Curating a Legacy: Annie (Rygle) James ’06 Elevates Thaddeus Mosley’s Art in Downtown Pittsburgh

Anastasia "Annie" (Rygle) James '06, Director of Galleries & Public Art for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, recently curated an art exhibit featuring four works by iconic Pittsburgh-based sculptor Thaddeus Mosley. The pieces, entitled, “Cross Current,” “Interior Decipher,” “Rhizogenic Rhythms” and “Illusory Progression” each stand 7 to 9 feet tall. The exhibit is part of an effort to bring more public art Downtown.

According to a piece about the exhibit on 90.5 WESA's website, "Mosley works primarily in wood, hand-carving downed hardwood trees into towering and often sinuous abstract forms that seem to defy gravity. He works with just a mallet, chisel and gauge."

In that piece, James notes how Mosley is an artist who has lived and worked in Pittsburgh his entire life, and yet he is internationally recognized. She added that Mosley's North Side studio was the first artist's studio she ever visited, more than 20 years ago, as a high school student at Shady Side.

Her goal of bringing Mosley's art to downtown was so that "people of all different backgrounds and experiences would be able to see Thad’s work in his own hometown in a significant way."

The four sculptures are on loan from Karma, the gallery in New York that represents Mosley. They will remain at 8th and Penn through next August.
