Country Day School recently welcomed acclaimed children’s author Philip Stead for a special visit with third, fourth, and fifth grade students.

Best known for the Caldecott Medal–winning “A Sick Day for Amos McGee,” which was illustrated by his wife, illustrator Erin E. Stead, Stead spoke with students about his newest book, “A Potion, a Powder, a Little Bit of Magic: Or, Like Lightning in an Umbrella Storm,” and the creative process behind writing and illustrating stories. He walked students through his process, from early sketches and rough drafts to the final illustrated pages, highlighting the collaboration between words and images that defines picture books.

Stead is also known for several other books he collaborated on with his wife, including beloved titles like “Music for Mr. Moon,” which won the Great Lakes Great Reads Award, as well as “Bear Has a Story to Tell” and “Lenny & Lucy.” His own works, such as “A Home for Bird,” often explore themes of friendship and curiosity.

Students eagerly asked questions and shared their own ideas, leaving the visit inspired to read, write, and create.
