As the 2024–2025 school year comes to a close, Shady Side Academy celebrates the extraordinary contributions of five retiring faculty and staff members whose combined 125 years of service have helped shape generations of students and define the SSA experience.

At the Senior School, Gene Deal, Alumni Engagement Officer, retires after an incredible 43-year career in both the Athletics Office as well as the Alumni & Development Office. Gene’s years at Shady Side have been marked by deep relationships, institutional knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to the community.

Also retiring from the Senior School are Karen Serdy, Spanish Teacher, who has inspired language learners at Shady Side for 41 years, and Carol Schneider, French Teacher, who brought energy and elegance to her teaching at SSA over 11 years.

At the Middle School, Mary Guering retires after 18 years as librarian, having nurtured a love of reading, research, and inquiry in students while curating a space that was both resource-rich and welcoming.

Joe Perry, a dedicated member of the Facilities team for 12 years, retires having supported the daily life of the Academy through his behind-the-scenes efforts.

Together, these remarkable individuals leave a lasting legacy of excellence, mentorship, and care. Their influence will echo through the halls for years to come.
