Winning Tradition Continues: Shady Side Academy Captures 2024 WPIAL Class 1A Field Hockey Championship

Shady Side Academy’s girls' field hockey team has once again claimed victory, winning the WPIAL Class 1A championship on Saturday, November 2, at Washington & Jefferson College. This marks the Bulldogs’ 21st WPIAL title, bringing them just one championship shy of the all-time league record.

The intense matchup against second-seeded Aquinas Academy remained scoreless until the fourth quarter when junior midfielder Coco M. delivered a game-winning goal with just under three minutes on the clock. Coco’s goal came off a rebound from a penalty corner, a strategic play that underscored her poise under pressure and the team’s relentless determination.

To reach the final, Shady Side Academy (16-4-0) decisively defeated Winchester Thurston in the semifinals with a 4-0 shutout. Their success in this year’s competition adds to an impressive legacy, with previous WPIAL titles spanning from the early 1990s to the recent years of 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023.

With this victory, Shady Side advances to the PIAA Field Hockey Championships, where they will face District III’s Camp Hill in the opening round on Tuesday, November 5. This will be the team’s 21st appearance in the state tournament, highlighting the Bulldogs’ consistency and prowess on the field.

Congratulations to the Shady Side Academy field hockey team on another stellar achievement!
