Shady Side Academy sophomore Tayshawn L. has been named the 2025 Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania (BGCWPA), an honor recognizing his academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to community impact.
A Stanton Heights resident and active member of BGCWPA’s Estelle S. Campbell Clubhouse, Tayshawn excels in both academics and athletics at SSA. Beyond the classroom, Tayshawn has participated in Money Matters financial literacy workshops, the S.E.L.F.I.E. Project focused on social-emotional learning and inclusion, and a professional pathways tech internship. He is also a member of the BGCWPA Youth Advocacy Council, using his voice to uplift and inspire his peers.
“Tayshawn exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose and passion,” said Scott Flurry, Director of Teen and Career Development at BGCWPA. “He has a vision to empower others and a heart for giving back to his community.”
Lindsey Wall, MS, Semper Scholars Program Coordinator for Shady Side Academy adds, "Tayshawn is a determined and hardworking student whose resilience and focus set him apart as a role model among his peers. His unwavering focus on academic success, personal growth, and community service make him a leader. His commitment to excellence, positive impact, and ability to inspire others make him a well-deserved Youth of the Year Award winner. I am proud to say he is a member of the Shady Side Academy Community."
Looking ahead, Tayshawn hopes to study computer science, technological engineering, or software development at Morehouse College, with a goal of mentoring young people and encouraging them to embrace their full potential.
As BGCWPA Youth of the Year, Tayshawn will compete at the Pennsylvania Youth of the Year competition, with the potential to advance to regional and national levels. He will be officially recognized at BGCWPA’s FOR KIDS Gala on March 29, 2025, at the Carnegie Museum of Art.
