In an exciting turn of events, Middle School Mathematics Teacher Rebecca Wright, Middle School parent Lindsay Kovach, and Chief Talent Recruitment and Development Officer Dr. Armani Davis, who coach basketball at Shady Side Academy's Middle School, found themselves enjoying a unique experience alongside their team. Rather than leading from the sidelines, they joined 10 sixth-grade girls as spectators for an unforgettable day at a Duquesne Women's Basketball game.
The team was treated to VIP access, offering the young athletes a rare glimpse into collegiate-level women's sports. Their adventure included meeting the Duquesne head coach Dan Burt, an exclusive tour of the locker room, and the thrill of cheering for the Duquesne Dukes right from the courtside as they clinched a victory against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies.
But the experience extended beyond just watching the game. The students delved into the life of a student-athlete, learning about the dedication and responsibility required to balance academics and sports. They also explored how playing women's basketball could open doors to other opportunities, both within the U.S. and internationally.
The event was more than just a fun outing for the team; it was an educational journey that highlighted the possibilities and achievements of women in sports. For these young SSA students, the day was an inspirational look at what their future could hold, on and off the court.
