Seven Students Named to PMEA Honors Ensembles

Seven students from Shady Side Academy have achieved notable recognition at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) festivals, showcasing their exceptional skills and dedication to their craft.

Senior Otis Liu and junior Jeffrey Brunner stood out among their peers, securing spots in the esteemed PMEA District 1 East Honors Band. Competing against a highly talented pool of students from various schools across the Pittsburgh region, both Liu and Brunner excelled in their auditions, earning the opportunity to perform at the festival hosted by Latrobe Area High School. The ensemble, under the distinguished baton of Dr. Dennis Glocke, Penn State professor emeritus, presented a program that highlighted the students' outstanding musicianship.

Adding to the list of PMEA accolades, two Senior School students, senior Sophia Jho, a harpist, and junior Sarah Voigt, a cellist, demonstrated their musical prowess by qualifying for and performing with the District 1 East Orchestra. This event took place at North Hills High School, gathering young musicians from Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. Jho and Voigt played alongside their peers in an orchestra that celebrated the talent and hard work of the region's top student musicians

The Performing Art program's success extended to the Middle School as well, with three students participating in the PMEA District 1 East Jr. High Honors Band Festival. Eighth-grader Eric Zhang (oboe), seventh-grader Rosa Iannetti (trumpet), and seventh-grader Hudson Roscoe (bassoon) were selected from a competitive field of students from both public and independent schools. Under the guidance of guest conductor Mr. Chad Heiny, the group of approximately 100 students rehearsed diligently, culminating in a performance. The concert featured a diverse repertoire, including the world premiere of "Postcards," an original composition by Mr. Heiny, adding a unique highlight to the event.
