Second graders at Shady Side Academy Junior School embark on an extraordinary journey each year through “Adventures in Fairytaling,” a beloved cross-curricular unit that transforms timeless stories into a dynamic, collaborative performance. This magical experience is a testament to the creativity and dedication of the second-grade team and Theater Arts teacher Nancy McGeever, whose collective efforts make this a highlight of the school year.
The unit begins in the classroom, where students explore the essential elements of fairy tales, such as enchanted settings, heroic characters, and moral lessons. They read original tales by the Brothers Grimm, compare them to modern adaptations, and analyze animated versions. "Students are often surprised by how different the originals are from the Disney versions they know," says second-grade teacher Claire Pilarski. Interactive games, such as “Would You Rather?” and “What’s Your Opinion?”, engage students in imaginative discussions while reinforcing key story concepts.
In Theater Arts, Mrs. McGeever guides students through the art of acting, teaching them to give and take focus onstage and to embody fully realized characters. "This performance sets them apart from the 'stand and deliver' format of the Kindergarten and First Grade mini-musicals," says Mrs. McGeever. "They collaborate with classmates to deliver an expressive performance on a full set. It’s truly a wicked good time!"
The excitement peaks on “draft day,” where students select their fairy tale characters and begin an in-depth character analysis. They read multiple versions of their chosen tales, uncovering insights into how their characters think, feel, and act. This process informs Mrs. McGeever’s writing of a three-act play, one act for each class, where every student’s character shines. The collaboration between the classroom teachers and Mrs. McGeever is key to crafting the script and preparing students for their moment in the spotlight.
The unit culminates in a stunning performance for families, complete with costumes, sets, and the students’ infectious enthusiasm. The celebration continues with a cast party, marking the end of a remarkable journey.
"Adventures in Fairytaling" is more than just a performance—it’s an opportunity for students to embrace critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration while bringing beloved stories to life. As Mrs. McGeever reflects, “It’s truly the most wonderful time of the year!”
