Relational Teaching in Action: Lauren Cannon

Relationships are the heart of exceptional teaching at Shady Side Academy, and Lauren Cannon exemplifies this philosophy in every aspect of her work. As a seventh-grade English teacher, Literary Magazine advisor, and lead advisor at the Middle School, she transforms her classroom into a vibrant haven where students feel recognized and respected both academically and personally.

Cannon’s teaching philosophy centers on creating an environment where students can explore ideas and collaborate with peers. In her English classroom, literature becomes a lens through which students learn to appreciate diverse perspectives.

"I love using the metaphor of a beautiful diamond," Cannon explains. "Every facet represents a different interpretation, and students get to see how each perspective shines in its own way." Through Socratic seminars and reflective practices, she encourages students to challenge their thinking and learn from one another in meaningful ways.

Fostering Growth Through Connection and Creativity

As the advisor for The Spiral Staircase, the Middle School’s digital literary magazine, Cannon provides students with an outlet to explore their creativity and develop leadership skills. The student-driven publication highlights original artwork and writing, with the editorial team taking ownership of every stage, from brainstorming themes to designing the final digital format. One of Cannon’s favorite parts of the process is watching students gain confidence in their abilities. "This project helps them find their voice and connect with the broader school community," she shares.

The magazine also fosters collaboration and camaraderie among its contributors. "We worked in unison, blending artworks and literature, and supported one another with reminders to not ‘burn our salads’—Mrs. Cannon’s way of saying, ‘Stay positive and don’t be too hard on yourself,’" recalls eighth-grader Veronika M.

Outside of academics, Cannon builds relationships that extend beyond the classroom. Whether debating favorite shades of purple during morning connections or learning about fantasy football from her advisees, she uses these moments to nurture trust and genuine care. "When students feel safe and valued, that’s when they really shine," Cannon says.

Guiding Students Toward Confidence and Success

Cannon’s dedication to her students is evident in how she supports their growth. Whether teaching the revision process or guiding students through complex texts, she models the messiness of learning and shows them that success is built through persistence and reflection. "I love modeling the writing process with them," she says. "It takes the fear out of it and helps them see that great writing comes from revision and hard work."

As the seventh-grade lead advisor, Cannon plays a key role in supporting her students’ overall development. Working closely with her team, she ensures every child feels supported and celebrated. This collaborative approach helps create a network of care that allows students to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.

For Cannon, middle school is an extraordinary time in a student’s life. "The growth students experience, their curiosity, and their willingness to be themselves make this a crucial window of development," she explains. "I feel fortunate to be part of their journey."

Empowering Students Through Relationships

At Shady Side, Cannon’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. Through her dedication to relational teaching, she creates a foundation of trust and support that empowers students to take risks, embrace challenges, and discover their unique strengths. Whether guiding them through literary analysis or collaborative projects like The Spiral Staircase, Cannon equips her students with the tools to navigate both academic and personal growth.

Her work reflects a deep belief in the power of connection and creativity to unlock potential. By fostering an environment where students feel valued and encouraged, Cannon inspires them to engage meaningfully with their peers, their passions, and the world around them. This relational approach ensures her students leave middle school not only as stronger learners but as confident, compassionate individuals ready to thrive.
