Middle School Students Earn Honors in AMC 8 and PA Math League Competitions

Several Shady Side Academy Middle School students earned awards and recognition for two math contests they participated in earlier this year.

In January 2022, students competed in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) 37th annual American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 8. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. Seventh grader Alex Chen earned the highest score among SSA students. Seventh grader Chloe Wang placed second among SSA students, and seventh grader Andrew Xing placed third (pictured).

In February 2022, Middle School students participated in the Pennsylvania Math League contest for middle school. The sixth grade team of Teddie Knox, Aaron Rai, Alyssa Zhang, Allison Guan and Aiden Goldstein placed 13th in the state and third in the region. The seventh grade team of Hanna Singhi, Andrew Xing, Alex Bi, Chloe Wang and Alex Chen placed eighth in the state and second in the region. The eighth grade team of Thomas Wang, Evan Xiang, Samraj Delfyett, Sam Davidheiser and Ethan Chen placed 13th in the state. Individually, Alex Chen placed 10th in the state and second in the region, Chloe Wang placed 17th in the state, and Aiden Goldstein placed 23rd in the state.

The students were recognized for their achievements during the Middle School's Academic Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, June 7.
