In Memoriam: Former Country Day School Headmaster Dick Whiteman

Richard “Dick” Whiteman, former headmaster and teacher at Fox Chapel Country Day School (now Shady Side Academy Country Day School) for more than 40 years, passed away on Sunday, May 14, at the age of 91.

Mr. Whiteman joined Fox Chapel Country Day School in 1959 as a music teacher and was appointed headmaster the next year, also teaching fifth grade. As headmaster, he instilled in his faculty and students the philosophy that “childhood is a journey, not a race.” He encouraged children to explore all areas of academics, arts, athletics and the outdoors, and invited students to join him in after-school clubs.

His love of music was infectious, teaching all students in grades PK-5 to engage in music and singing. Countless students and families were entertained by his fun, skillful and creative direction of children’s performances, and his fifth grade musicals were much-anticipated events every year. Even after his retirement in 2001 and the school’s merger with Shady Side Academy in 2017, Mr. Whiteman remained a presence in the Country Day community, attending performances and teaching private music lessons until his passing. He was a humble, humorous and dedicated friend and leader to many in our community.

There will not be a funeral service. Rest in peace, Mr. Whiteman.
