Shady Side Academy freshman Alyssa Z. delivered a remarkable performance at the 2024 WPIAL Girls’ Golf Individual Championships, making up an eight-stroke deficit to claim the Class 2A title. Alyssa’s victory, which took place at Butler Country Club on October 1, marks her as the second WPIAL girls' golf individual champion in Shady Side Academy history.
Alyssa entered the final round trailing by eight strokes but delivered an even-par 72 in rainy conditions to finish with a 36-hole total of 155 (+11). Her impressive round included five birdies, three of which came on the front nine, and eight pars. This performance allowed her to overtake Eden Christian Academy junior Pearl L., who finished with the silver medal for the second consecutive year.
Alyssa’s victory is a historic one, as she becomes the first freshman to win a WPIAL girls’ golf individual championship since 2019. She also joins Shady Side Academy alumna Margaret P., who won the Class 3A title in 2006, as one of the school’s two individual champions in WPIAL girls’ golf.
With this victory, Alyssa has qualified for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Girls’ Golf Individual Championships, which will be held on October 21-22 at Penn State Golf Courses.
