This fall, Shady Side Academy Senior School presented five performances of the play “R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots),” a new translation and adaptation of Karel Čapek's groundbreaking science fiction masterpiece. The performances took place in the Peter J. Kountz Black Box Theater at the Hillman Center on November 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10, 2024.
"R.U.R." explores the tension between human innovation and the unintended consequences of progress. Set in a not-so-distant future, the story follows Rossum's Universal Robots, machines created to replace human labor. As these robots evolve and begin to rise against their creators, society faces a startling and catastrophic reckoning. The play delves into themes of power, identity, and what it truly means to be human, resonating powerfully at a time when artificial intelligence and automation are reshaping our world. Its striking imagery and thought-provoking narrative captivated audiences, offering a gripping reflection on the societal implications of technological advancement.
The cast and crew featured 24 students from grades 9-12. Leading roles were played by Senior Kevin P. as Henry Domin, Sophomore Eva F. as Helena Glory Domin, Senior Juliet Krokosky as Alquist, Freshman Alexandra H. as Dr. Hallemeier, Senior Orion K. as Consul Busman, and Bres P. S.-B. as Dr. Gall.
Supporting roles included Sophomore Zoe F. as Nana, Sophomore Anna L. as Reporter 1 and Robot Helena, Sophomore Noah T.-J. as Reporter 2 and Robot Primus, Senior Jeffrey B. as Reporter 3 and Radius, Junior Cassie L. as Sulla and Robot 2, Freshman TJ R. as Marius and Robot 1, and Freshman Arnav D. as Robot 3.
The student crew, led by Stage Manager Senior Tommy K., Projection Designer Senior Ada L., Sound Designer Junior Lily T., and Assistant Lighting Designer Junior Sam D., played a crucial role in bringing the futuristic set and ambitious technical elements to life. Other crew members included Sophomore Alexander B., Sophomore Chloe C.T., Senior Lila C., Senior Carson D., Senior Ethan H., and Freshman Emily L.
Senior School Performing Arts Chair Dek Ingraham, MFA, directed the production, with Senior Kelita N. serving as assistant director.
