Exploring Action Painting through Kindergarten’s Jackson Pollock Study

As part of the Junior School's Social Studies program, Kindergarten classes are diving into the world of art through an exciting artist study. The first artist in focus is the renowned Jackson Pollock, known for his distinctive "action painting" technique. This hands-on experience gave some of SSA’s youngest learners a unique opportunity to explore Pollock’s style by engaging in an energetic and creative process.

On September 26, all three Kindergarten classes gathered outside the Early Learning Center (ELC) from for a collaborative art project. Using unconventional tools, students worked together on a large fabric canvas, channeling Pollock’s dynamic approach to painting.

The children mimicked the fluid and spontaneous movements that define Pollock’s work as they created their own. The joy was palpable as they watched their colorful creation come to life.

“We loved seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces when the paint was flicked, splattered, or went flying in the air,” shared Kindergarten teacher Amy Kim. “It was also a standout moment to see the finished project. We were in awe of the painting.”

In addition to the outdoor collaboration, students also participated in a fun indoor activity inspired by Pollock’s techniques. They placed black paper inside cardboard boxes, selected three paint colors, and dropped them onto the paper. Then, by tossing marbles into the boxes and shaking them, the students created their own Jackson Pollock-style masterpieces, eagerly watching as the marbles "danced” across the paper.

This experience not only introduced our students to the concept of action painting but also highlighted the value of working together as a community to produce a collective work of art. The project helped the students develop their understanding of art history, foster their creativity, and enhance their teamwork skills. It’s just the beginning of our thematic artist study, and the Kindergarteners are already looking forward to discovering more creative inspirations throughout the year.

The collaborative masterpiece is on display in the ELC for all who want to stop by and witness the energy and enthusiasm that went into its creation.
