At Shady Side Academy, innovation and initiative thrive among our students, and one inspiring example is the work of Laurence P., who is leading a new project aimed at educating young minds about finance and investing. With a passion for financial literacy that began in middle school, Laurence has taken the next step in his journey by launching The Base Camp Brief, a weekly AI-generated newsletter tailored for young readers.

The newsletter, which recently debuted on December 15, offers simple, engaging, and accessible summaries of financial news, designed to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and investors. "The Base Camp Brief is about making financial news approachable and empowering young people to take an interest in their financial futures," Laurence explains.

This initiative is the latest in a series of accomplishments by Laurence. Earlier this year, he founded Everest, an organization dedicated to advancing youth financial literacy and inspiring young people to explore careers in finance. As part of Everest, Laurence has hosted guest speakers from various industries to share insights with students, sparking conversations about entrepreneurship and investing.

Additionally, Laurence authored Investing for Teens, a short book on youth financial literacy that is now available in multiple local libraries. Through this book, he hopes to provide middle school students and others with a foundational understanding of finance and investing.

Now, with The Base Camp Brief, Laurence is extending his impact even further. The free weekly newsletter aims to simplify financial news, making it accessible and engaging for students. While Laurence hopes to share this resource with other schools in the region, SSA remains at the heart of his efforts. “Shady Side Academy will always be our top priority, but we hope to make this tool accessible to as many young people as possible,” he says.
