Bringing Literature to Life: Middle School Students Take on Mock Trial

In Mrs. Sarah Falbo and Mrs. Lauren Cannon's Middle School English classes, students took a brief pause in their study of The Outsiders to step into the courtroom for a Mock Trial centered on a key conflict in the novel. This immersive experience brought the story to life, allowing students to explore the text through critical analysis, persuasive techniques, and collaborative performance.

Taking on roles as prosecuting attorneys, defense attorneys, and character witnesses, students dove deep into the text to substantiate their claims. They used evidence from the novel, conducted outside research, and applied their understanding of rhetoric to craft compelling case notes and testimony. With clear arguments and thoughtful questioning, students showcased their ability to think critically, speak confidently, and engage in persuasive dialogue.

The Mock Trial was more than just an exercise in public speaking; it was a dynamic showcase of student learning. By inhabiting the perspectives of various characters, students gained a deeper understanding of The Outsiders while honing essential skills such as argumentation, teamwork, and textual analysis.

This memorable activity also served as the perfect launchpad for the next unit: persuasive writing. In the coming weeks, students will study historical speeches, analyze their rhetorical impact, and write their own persuasive pieces. The Mock Trial experience has prepared them to approach this work with a deeper appreciation for the power of words and the art of persuasion.
