Two Students Accepted to Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra
Mark Appleman
Nora Navid
Shady Side Academy junior Mark Appleman and freshman Nora Navid, both talented violinists, were recently accepted as members of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra (PYSO) for 2018-2019 after competitive auditions this month. Appleman and Navid join junior violinists Nicole Jani and Amanda Zeng, who were accepted to the PYSO in 2017-2018, bringing the number of SSA students in the PYSO violin section to four next year.

All four students are members of the SSA Senior School String Orchestra, which is under the direction of music teacher Dr. Dan Brill.

The PYSO is one of the oldest and most advanced youth orchestras in the country. It is comprised of 90-100 musicians ages 14-20 and utilizes conductors and coaches from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The PYSO performs several concerts each year at Heinz Hall and other venues around Pittsburgh, and is broadcast regularly on WQED-FM radio. Learn more about the PYSO.

Congratulations, Mark and Nora!
