Students Compete at Pittsburgh Regional Science & Engineering Fair

Four Shady Side Academy students competed in the Covestro Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair (PRSEF) at Heinz Field on March 23.

Three Senior School students competed in the PRSEF Senior Division (grades 9-12). Junior Shreya Gulati won 10 awards for her project AMD-Analysis of Mine Drainage, including an Affiliate Award from the Association for Women Geoscientists; two Sponsor Awards from the Waynesburg University ACS Student Chapter and Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America; six scholarships from Allegheny University, Duquesne University, IUP College of Natural Science and Mathematics, Mount Aloysius College, Slippery Rock University, and University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg; and an Associate Scientist Perseverance Award. In addition, she received a Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Scientific Method.

Freshman Jason Wu won a Sponsor Award from PPG for this project, National Characteristics That Lead to Superhydrophobicity and a Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Creativity.

Sophomore Feno Monaco presented his project, What's Up With Water? and received a Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Scientific Merit.

Middle School eighth grader Steven Liu competed in the Intermediate Division for grades 7-8. Liu's project, Electronic Prevention of Rust, received Sponsor Awards from ASM International, Eaton Corporation and the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, Inc.; and an Affiliate Award from the US Navy/US Marine Corps (Office of Naval Research). In addition, he received a fourth place award in the Intermediate Engineering/Robotics category.

The PRSEF competition is open to students in grades 6-12 from the 26 counties within Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland. Learn more at www.scitechfestival.org.
