SSA's National Merit Semifinalists & Commended Students

National Merit Scholarship logoFive members of the Shady Side Academy Class of 2019 were named semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented students have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. The SSA semifinalists are:

  • Oliver Henry
  • Nicholas Lauer
  • Connor Leemhuis
  • Walter Navid
  • Amanda Zeng

The 16,000 semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest scorers in each state on the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). To become a finalist, the semifinalist must submit a detailed scholarship application, have an outstanding academic record, be recommended by a school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirm the qualifying test performance. Of 16,000 semifinalists, 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level in February.

Also, 11 Shady Side seniors received Letters of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students represent the remaining 34,000 of the 50,000 highest scorers on the 2017 PSAT/NMSQT, after the semifinalists. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some do become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. SSA's Commended Students are:

  • Caroline Barkman
  • Adam Bozzone
  • Djibril Branche
  • Katherine Hart
  • Catalina Jegasothy
  • Mary "Emmie" Lau
  • Nicholas Sawicki
  • Charles Sherk
  • Koji Shimada
  • Andrew Sveda
  • Bradin Zaba

Congratulations to all 16 members of the Class of 2019!
