SSA Students Win Academic WorldQuest Regional Competition

SSA Academic WorldQuest TeamA team of four Shady Side Academy Senior School students won the Academic WorldQuest Regional Competition held Friday, March 16, at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pa. They competed against six other teams and were tested on their knowledge of world affairs, geography, history, culture and current events.

The team is waiting to find out if it has earned a place at the Academic WorldQuest National Competition, to be held in Washington, D.C., on April 26-27.

SSA's WorldQuest team is comprised of seniors Matteo Secomandi, Djibril Branche (who was out sick for the regional) and Andrew Sveda, and junior Arjun Patel. The team is coached by history faculty members Rachel McCool and Kyle Smith.

Sponsored by the World Affairs Council of America, Academic WorldQuest is a competition that tests students' knowledge of international affairs, current events and other information about the world. The 2018-2019 categories include: Country in Focus: Qatar; How to Deal with North Korea; Global Refugee and Migration Crisis; #WeAreNATO The Alliance of 70; Great Decisions; Japan-U.S. Relations; Space Policy; World Trade Organization (WTO); Bridging Divides to Build Peace; and Current Events. SSA has won the Academic WorldQuest regional competition and advanced to nationals in five of the last six years (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).
