Students Raise Funds for Pitt Book Drive in Response to Tree of Life Tragedy

After the Tree of Life tragedy, Shady Side Academy Senior School students in Pamela Boehm's Social Justice class were moved to help the Pittsburgh community. The class coordinated efforts with the SSA Middle School and SSA parent Dr. Shannon Wanless, director of the Office of Child Development (OCD) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Education, to support Pitt's book drive in response to the Tree of Life shooting and other gun violence and racism in the area. The Pitt drive sought donated or purchased picture books to help children understand how to manage their fears and learn about the importance of embracing diversity.

The Senior School Social Justice students held a series of bake sales, while the Middle School held a series of dress-down days, to raise a total of $1,634 for the book drive. In total the Pitt drive collected more than 3,000 books that were donated and delivered to early childcare facilities in the area on Jan. 18.
