SSA Alumnae Compete in "Battle at the Burgh" Women's College Hockey Tournament

Chayla Edwards and Gwyn PhilipsOn Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020, Shady Side Academy alumnae Chayla Edwards '19 and Gwyneth Philips '19 returned home to Pittsburgh to compete in the first-ever "Battle at the Burgh" women's college hockey invitational tournament at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.

Edwards and Philips, who helped the SSA girls prep hockey team to three WIHLMA titles in four years and also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite team, play for NCAA Division 1 teams that were competing in the tournament. Edwards plays defense for the University of Wisconsin, and Philips plays goaltender for Northeastern University. The tournament also included teams from Robert Morris University and Colgate University.

Wisconsin defeated Northeastern, 4-3, in the championship game on Sunday. SSA girls prep hockey players, as well as SSA coaches Kate Binnie, Pam Lloyd, Dave Havern and Minhnoi Wroble, cheered on Edwards and Philips in the game.
