Several members of the Shady Side Academy Senior School Speech and Debate Team have qualified to compete in state and national tournaments this spring and summer.
Junior Max Minard (Humorous Interpretation), junior Akshay Amesur (Impromptu Speaking), junior Giri Viswanathan (Congress House of Representatives), and juniors Alex Reuter and Ahmer Shaikh (News Broadcasting) will compete at the Pennsylvania High School Speech League (PHSSL) State Tournament March 15-16 at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.
Four of the five students qualified for two different national tournaments as well.
Minard, Shaikh and Viswanathan qualified to compete in the National Catholic Forensics League (NCFL) Grand National Tournament, held May 25-26 in Milwaukee, Wisc. The students earned a trip to nationals based on their performance at the NCFL qualifier event at Upper St. Clair Fort Couch Middle School on March 2.
Minard (Humorous Interpretation) and Amesur (Informative Speaking), both pictured above, qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) Tournament, held June 16-21 in Dallas, Texas, based on their performance at NSDA district qualifiers on March 9 at Marshall Middle School.
