Shady Side Academy Class of 2020 College Decisions

Shady Side Academy is proud to announce that the 94 members of the Class of 2020, who concluded their high school days on Friday, May 29, will attend 60 of the world's finest colleges and universities this fall. With a broad range of academic interests and a genuine curiosity, these graduates leave SSA ready to make their mark on the classrooms and communities they are about to join.

Some notable college matriculation statistics for the Class of 2020:
  • Admitted to 158 colleges
  • Will attend 60 colleges in 22 states plus Washington, D.C.
  • 68% will attend college out of state
  • 100% of those seeking merit scholarships earned awards
  • 11% will attend Ivy League Plus schools
  • 12% will play college athletics in 6 different sports
  • 29% will attend a US News & World Report Top 25 National University or Liberal Arts College
  • 50% will attend a US News & World Report Top 50 National University or Liberal Arts College
  • 62% will attend a Barron's "most competitive" college
  • 60% overall admit rate vs. global average of 38%
  • 14% Ivy League Plus admit rate vs. global average of 7%

These college decisions are the culmination of an educational journey at Shady Side Academy that challenges students to think expansively, act ethically and lead responsibly. Through a rigorous and balanced curriculum of academics, arts and athletics, and a unique culture of faculty-student mentorship, SSA ensures its graduates have the discipline, drive and intellect to succeed wherever they go next.

A snapshot of the Class of 2020's SSA experience:

  • 13% were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship program
  • 15% are "lifers" who attended SSA from grades K-12
  • 22% participated in the Senior School boarding program
  • 23% participated in a global or off-campus program
  • 29% completed an independent study or senior project
  • 37% participated in the performing arts (theatre production or musical ensemble)
  • 49% attended SSA Middle School
  • 83% lettered in at least one varsity sport; 53% lettered in two or more

SSA's College Counseling Office and its three full-time college counselors have partnered with these students and their families to find "best fit" colleges and universities that will nurture their abilities and undiscovered talents, while allowing them to realize their career aspirations.
