Senior Wins Rotary Club Service Above Self Award

Brian FosterShady Side Academy graduating senior Brian Foster was recently honored by the Rotary Club of Fox Chapel Area with the club's "Service Above Self" Award. Foster was presented with the award at a luncheon on June 7 at the Pittsburgh Field Club, where he was accompanied by his parents and SSA Senior School Librarian and Director of Service Learning Lindsey Myers.

The Service Above Self Award is a $2,000 prize given by the Rotary Club to a local student who serves others in significant way.

Foster's dedication to service is illustrated by the variety of projects he has participated in since his freshman year at Shady Side Academy. As a member of the Senior School Service Learning Club, Foster volunteered at Produce to People, Redd Up Pittsburgh, the MLK Day of Service and the World Speech and Debate Tournament at SSA. He also volunteered as an usher at the Hillman Center for Performing Arts. Outside of school, He has volunteered at the Jubilee Soup Kitchen and the United Way's "Be My Neighbor Day," tutored for the Manchester Youth Development Center and FAME, and completed other service activities as a member of his church.

"Brian, through his quiet strength and sincere kindness, has been a wonderful example to other students throughout his four years at Shady Side Academy, since he dedicates as much time to service and helping others as he does to his own academics," said Myers.

Foster plans to attend Princeton University in the fall.

Congratulations, Brian!
