Senior School Pre-Med Club Observes Robotic Surgery

Pre-Med Club examines removed lungOn Monday, Nov. 5, more than 20 students in the Shady Side Academy Senior School Pre-Med Club traveled to UPMC Presbyterian to observe a robotic surgery procedure. Students observed SSA parent Dr. Inderpal Sarkaria, who coordinated a team of surgeons and nurses in completing a robotic-assisted lobectomy (removal of a portion of the lung).

Students also had the opportunity to test their robotic surgery skills on training simulators and robotic activities and learned a lot about pulmonary anatomy by examining the removed lung itself. Everyone had an outstanding time observing a physical surgery and gaining exposure in the field.

The trip was coordinated by the Pre-Med Club officers, juniors Giri Viswanathan, Alex Reuter and Elena Hoffman, under the guidance of club faculty advisor Greg Weiss.

Thank you, Dr. Sarkaria, for hosting our students!
