On Friday, Dec. 11, the senior membership of the Shady Side Academy Senior School Diversity Leadership Council (DLC), which includes seniors Ishika Arora, Gabi Jegasothy, Renee Long, Charlotte McDaniel, Paige Shea and Katie Sparvero and juniors Rohan Anand, Inyaa Ashok, Grace Greeno, Vanessa Han and Melody Yuan, hosted the first of two mini Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) workshops for the council's 16 new members. Remote learners were able to participate in special virtual sessions.
Students used the training they gained at previous years' SDLC national conferences, hosted by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), in addition to work they've been doing this past year on campus. The workshops included a spectrum and fishbowl activity about different identifiers (race, gender, sexual orientation, social class, ability, etc.) as they related to the students. The DLC will finish the workshops this Friday, Dec. 18, by watching excerpts from Marc Lamont Hill's keynote speech at the 2018 NAIS SDLC conference. Congratulations to the students and faculty advisors Pam Boehm and Creighton Runnette.
