On Saturday, Nov. 17, the Shady Side Academy Junior and Middle School robotics teams competed against 32 teams at the Shady Side Open, a FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competitive robotics scrimmage hosted annually at SSA Middle School. Several SSA teams earned awards at the event.
The Middle School Green Team placed second in the AM session in the Scholastic Division with a score of 86 points. Highlights included completing the crater crossing. Team members include Jeffrey Brunner, Jasper Chapman, Mohamed Elsayed, Milan Golla, Shaurya Gulati, Harry Kelson, Sid Ramineni, John Rhee and Rishil Saxena.
The Middle School Blue Team placed third with a score of 70 points, completing the core sample extraction. Team members include Jack Bransome, Andrew Hoe, Josh Kaufman, Joe Krokosky, Deven Nahata, Leo Rickard, Hari Viswanathan and Andrew Zeng.
The Middle School Gold Team placed fourth with a score of 65 points, completing the observatory alignment. Team members include Ahniya Anthony, Elaine Gombos, Elizabeth Kamin, Cassidy Mineo and Smrithi Shyam.
The Middle School Purple Team finished with a score of 16 points, completing the space travel payload ramp. Team members include Annalise Alexander, Anna Apetri-Pandrea, Sophia Gombos, Ava Jankowski and Ava Terezis.
The Junior School robotics team also completed. Team members included Julian Aguiar, Sam Davidheiser, Samraj Delfyett, Bo Huang, Daniel Maiz, Mateo Maiz, Oliver McCarroll, Regan Mulderig and Abigail Mullin. The team showed calm under pressure in each of the three rounds. During the second round, the team completed two of the challenges successfully.
The Shady Side Open is one of several competitive scrimmages around the region to prepare teams for the Western Pennsylvania FIRST LEGO League Grand Championship.
The Middle School teams are coached by science teacher Matt Brunner and Spanish teacher Andrea Cespedes, and the Junior School team is coached by science teacher Jeff McCarroll. Congratulations to all of the students!
