The Shady Side Academy Senior School Quiz Bowl Team competed in the National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT) 2018 High School National Championship, held May 25-27 in Atlanta, Ga.
SSA placed 150th overall out of 352 teams from across the country, going 6-4 in the preliminary rounds to qualify for the playoff round, but falling to a team from Detroit Country Day School in the first round of playoffs.
The Shady Side team consisted of seniors Nick Becker, Will Davis, Jude Rosen, Fuad Youssef and Justin Yuan. Individually, Davis was among the top 10 percent of competitors at the national tournament, ranking 150th out of 1,664 students, while Youssef ranked 308th. Individual rankings are based on each player's average points per 20 tossups heard.
SSA qualified for the NAQT High School National Championship by finishing fourth at the Carnegie Quiz Invitational at Carnegie Mellon University in February. Schools can qualify either by placing in the top 15% of the field at a high school varsity tournament that uses NAQT questions and is attended by teams from at least three schools, or by winning any class or division of an official state championship with rules and questions similar to those of NAQT.
National Academic Quiz Tournaments organizes the premier high school and college quiz bowl championships in North America. NAQT was founded in 1996 by former players and coaches from across the country. Learn more at www.naqt.com.
