Playoff Update: Football, Cross Country and Girls Tennis

Shady Side Academy (10-0) held off Serra Catholic, 22-20, in the first round of the WPIAL 2A Football Championship on Friday, Nov. 2, at home. SSA took a 2-0 lead with a safety in the first quarter, then scored three TDs in the second quarter – a 45-yard punt return and 60-yard interception return by senior Dino Tomlin and a 30-yard run by senior Ronan O'Connor – to go up 22-0. Serra scored on an 99-yard interception return before halftime to make it 22-7, then rallied for 13 points in the fourth quarter but came up short. SSA will face South Side Beaver in the WPIAL quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at Montour High School.

Cross Country

SSA senior Leo Liu finished 64th (18:25) and sophomore Adam Lauer finished 90th (18:42) out of 211 runners at the PIAA Class A Boys Cross Country Championships, held Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Parkview Cross Country Course in Hershey, Pa. Liu and Lauer qualified for the PIAAs after earning 14th and 20th place, respectively, at the WPIAL Championships on Oct. 25.

Girls Tennis

The SSA duo of junior Elle Santora and senior Aya Youssef finished fourth overall at the PIAA 3A Girls Doubles Tennis Championship, held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3, at the Hershey Racquet Club in Hershey, Pa. Santora and Youssef defeated Meg Ulrich and Olivia Gorak-Lacquement of Carlisle, 6-0 and 6-0, in the first round, and Kanon Ciarocchi and Lucy Hederick of Radnor, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, in the quarterfinals on Friday. On Saturday, Santora and Youssef fell to Dina Nouamie and Tina Prince of Methacton in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-3, and lost to Tashanna Smith and Natalie Sinai of Freedom in the consolation match, 6-4, 6-4, to finish fourth overall.
