Middle School Students Witness Teacher's Naturalization Ceremony

Shady Side Academy Middle School Spanish teacher Andrea Cespedes officially became a U.S. citizen on Tuesday, Dec. 18, and chose to hold her naturalization ceremony with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services at a Middle School assembly, so the students could witness and share in her experience. Cespedes says that thanks to her parents, she grew up in a country that made it possible for her to follow her dreams.

"My parents moved to the land of opportunity so that my sister and I could have a better life than they did, which after all, is every parent's wish for their children," she says.

She says that becoming a U.S. citizen is a dream come true.

A native speaker of Spanish, Cespedes joined the SSA faculty in 2011-2012 as a part-time replacement Spanish teacher at the Junior and Middle Schools, then became the Middle School's full-time Spanish teacher in 2012.
