Meet Blue, the New SSA Bulldog Mascot!

Shady Side Academy's new bulldog mascot, Blue, made a memorable debut at the 2021 Homecoming celebration on Saturday, Oct. 9. In the midst of the Kids Carnival, Blue danced out from the Farrell Stadium archways into the street to the song Who Let the Dogs Out? flanked by the SSA cheerleaders on either side. Afterward, Blue hung out at the Curry Gym Patio to meet and pose for pictures with members of the SSA community, from toddlers and students to teachers, alumni and grandparents.

Next, Blue accompanied the SSA football team as they ran through the Homecoming banner onto McKelvy Field for the big game, and joined the cheerleaders on the sidelines to help pump up the crowd – even using a slingshot to fire Bulldog T-shirts and hats into the stands!

The mascot's name, Blue, was chosen by PK-12 students, faculty and staff via survey. Other names in the running included Goldie, Cap, Flop and Glory. The mascot costume was designed by Rickabaugh Graphics and produced by Costume Specialists.

Special thanks to sophomore Jack Engel for bringing Blue to life for the very first time, and to his expert mascot trainer, Associate Director of Auxiliary Programs Blair Trunzo.
