Junior School Canned Food Drive and Teacher Parade Yields 75 Boxes of Donations

The Shady Side Academy Junior School community collected roughly 75 boxes of canned and non-perishable food donations during the Canned Food Drive and Teacher Parade on Friday, May 22. All donations were delivered to the Wilkinsburg Community Ministry that afternoon to be distributed to families in need.

Junior School families were invited to drive to the school on Friday afternoon between 2-4 p.m. with their donation in their trunk, and a staff member safely collected the donation as they pulled up in the traffic circle. Teachers were lined up around the traffic circle six feet apart with cheerful signs so that students and families could wave hello to them along the drive.

The event was spearheaded by pre-kindergarten teacher Claire Pilarski.

"We know that there are so many in our community experiencing food insecurity during this pandemic. It was hard to sit back and not do anything about it," said Pilarski. "On top of that as teachers, we are in such a unique situation where we are used to seeing our students every day and can't anymore. So I thought it would be fun to combine the best of both worlds – host an event where we can help those in need and share smiles with those we love most during what can be a trying time for our families!"
