Two different academic prizes for the 2016-2017 school year were awarded to four students at Shady Side Academy Senior School community assembly on Friday, Sept. 1, 2017.
The John H. Cohen Family Award is a book prize given for general improvement in scholarship, vigor, citizenship and character to a member of the third, fourth and fifth forms. The 2016-2017 recipients were current sophomore Aaliya Aga, senior Lindsey Grune and junior Joseph Tomson.
The Instructor's Prize in American History is a book prize is awarded to the student who, while enrolled in the U.S. History course, has completed the research paper that best displays the qualities of scholarship essential for developing competence in the study of history. The 2016-2017 winner was current senior Emily Weiss. Weiss' paper, Man Up!: Gender Politics and How They Pushed the U.S. Towards Imperialism During the Presidencies of McKinley and Roosevelt, examined the role of gender and the perceived threat to masculinity in fostering a cultural environment of militarism and imperialism at the turn of the 20th century in America.
