Holocaust Survivor Speaks to Middle School Students
On Wednesday, Jan. 31, Irene Furst, a Pittsburgher and Holocaust survivor, spoke to Shady Side Academy Middle School students in grades 6-8 about her experiences during World War II.
Furst shared the harrowing circumstances she encountered as she survived the ghettoization of her hometown of Lodz, Poland, as well as the Auschwitz concentration camp and the Stutthof Death March. She explained how working in conjunction with others helped her live and gave her hope. The students were poised and attentive during her talk and asked very insightful questions. Students reflected on the experience by writing thank you notes to Mrs. Furst.
