Hillman Series Presents Poor Man's Gambit, The Amazing Max in March

Poor Man's GambitThe 2018-2019 Hillman Performing Arts Series at Shady Side Academy continues with back-to-back shows in March: Celtic trio Poor Man's Gambit will perform Saturday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. while magician The Amazing Max will perform Saturday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. Both shows takes place in the Hillman Center for Performing Arts on the Shady Side Academy Senior School campus at 423 Fox Chapel Road, Fox Chapel. Poor Man's Gambit (March 9) is an energetic trio of traditional Irish musicians blending Celtic and American music, comprised of Corey Purcell (button accordion, cittern, vocals, bodhran, dance), Federico Betti (guitar, fiddle), and Deirdre Lockman (fiddle, vocals, dance). The trio will perform an intimate show in the Hillman Center's Peter J. Kountz Black Box Theater. All tickets are $20 and include coffeehouse treats. The Amazing MaxThe Amazing Max (March 16) delivers an interactive, all-around silly magic show for all ages. Max Darwin combines magic and comedy, making objects appear and disappear and generally defying the laws of physics inches from theatergoer's faces. Operating on the principle that "every show is unique because every child brought to the stage is unique," Max conjures a custom magic experience that kids will carry with them long after the show ends. Max will perform on the main stage of the Hillman Center's Richard E. Rauh Theater. Tickets are $24-$30 and include a pre-show magic lab, some come early to join the fun. While in town, The Amazing Max also will perform for patients at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh as part of the Hillman Center's community outreach program. After The Amazing Max, only one show remains in the 2018-2019 Hillman Performing Arts Series. The zany juggling antics of The Flying Karamazov Brothers hit the Hillman Center main stage on Saturday, April 13.
